A very good history

A very good book, a straightforward historical account of this most famous train, written in a clear prose and well researched. In structuring his chapter heading author Cookridge encapsulates the 'life and times' of this fabulous train, leading us through the original concept, a biography of its creator, the "maiden voyage" in 1893 and the glorious adventures, misadventures of both the train and some of the notorious, celebrated passengers to the sad demise and final auctioning-off of its remains in Monte Carlo in 1977.
Whilst the author explores the invented outlines, plots and sub-plots of the famous fictional accounts - James Bond, Agatha Christie and Hollywood - these pale in comparison to the true-life adventures of robbery, banditti, kidnapping, near-starvation and frost-bite in the "ice-age" winter of 1929 and derailments into snow and German station restaurants. Wonderfully illustrated with over 50 period photographs and impressions, this work brings the entire, wonderful story sharply into focus, causing his many of his readers to probably regret the loss of this marvelous service and life-style.
One amusing misstep by Cookridge brought forth a rueful grin - in just the second paragraph of his opening chapter the author expresses his intent to "to record for a more mundane generation" the glamour and drama of this famous train. Well, after all, in comparison to those travelling generations, perhaps our modern world is a little more mundane and without the original Orient Express around it is certainly less glamorous.

Highly entertaining book about the history of the Orient Express! An iconic train that is largely forgotten by most, with the exception of Agatha Christie fans, reading this book brings the railway to life! Chock full of ancedotes and history tidbits, including stories about its famous passengers, this book is a must have for anyone interested in the history of the Orient Express.

I read this for research for a novel I'm writing set on the Orient Express. This was a great brief history of the beginnings of the line as well as a history of the highlights over the years. I learned a lot of details that will help flesh out my novel.

“Fat Girl Skinny” is instantly engaging, constantly entertaining, and superbly written. I applaud Mrs. Archer’s courage as she transmogrifies her personal experiences into a profoundly introspective, yet irreverently funny, cliffhanging page-turner. Who knew weight loss could be this captivating?

I loved this book. Amye is witty, funny, and brutally honest. Her writing style is terrific. I laughed and cried. Any one that went through low self esteem, or lack of self confidence issues will relate. You will be cheering her on from page one, and you won't want to put this down.

Loved this book! Amye has a way with words and let's us "in" like you're talking with a good friend. Amye Archer is so open and honest with a great wit and sense of humor. The book speaks about Amye's struggles in young adulthood, from a failed marriage to dating and Amye's battle of the bulge - all in no-holds barred style! Who hasn't gone through embarrassing times in their life? This book has a way of making you feel it's OKAY to be who you are, lumps, bruises and all, and in the end, it will all work out. As a fan of Amye's blog "The Fat Girl Blog", I was looking forward to this book and was not disappointed! You won't be either! It's a great weekend or beach read - you'll get immersed in this book and won't be able to put it down!

Sweet, sweet history

A practical and common sense view of history is presented in this book. It's pretty easy to follow but there are times when dates are scattered about in strange orders that can cause some confusion. Overall, I really enjoy reading this book. I'm psyched that it was so cheap for my history class.

Brooks (sociology, Univ. of California at Riverside), having studied under and been inspired by the highly esteemed Elijah Anderson at the University of Pennsylvania, provides an ethnographic description of recreational basketball in South Philadelphia. A self-professed frustrated former high school basketball player (he blames himself and his former coach for his shortcomings), the author looks at the hopes and dreams of young inner-city black men he coached who aspired to play ball professionally. In true sociological tradition, he presents detailed information on members of the famed Blade Rodgers Neighborhood Development League, based on interviews with these athletes, their families, coaches, and other locals. While focusing on two athletes in particular, Brooks educates readers about a number of "street" realities (e.g., the daily struggle for survival and basketball viewed as a way out of the ghetto). Demystifying certain racial stereotypes, Brooks explains that even God-given skills must be developed through hard work and dedication. Realistic view of youth basketball

I use this book in my sociology of sports class. One of my students is a retired NBA player: he says it's a realistic portrayal of his experience. The book is an ethnographic study - that is, personal observations, participation, interviews and notes - on Black kids in Philadelphia and their experience in after school basketball league. Coaches, parents and the teen boys are all given a chance to tell their story and the result is a very readable and engaging study of the structural forces and individual determination that lead to a basketball college scholarship. Or not. "You either a basketball player or a drug dealer" is my favorite quote. Does it reinforce stereotypes about inner city black youth? You decide.

Roberto Ulloa has a diverse academic record in multiple disciplines within the field of computer science. Currently, he is working with artificial societies as part of his PhD thesis at the University of Western Ontario. He obtained an MSc degree from the University of Costa Rica and taught programming and computer networking there. He has earned a living as a web developer, working with Python/Django and PHP/Wordpress. Good for intermediate to advanced Python programmers looking to get started with Kivy

This second edition of "Kivy - Interactive Applications and Games in Python" is much improved from the first edition. The atrocious grammar throughout the first edition book has mostly been fixed, although it's still worse than what I expect from a professionally edited book. The new chapters showcase current Kivy features while reiterating how to build a basic Kivy app, and the book covers an impressive amount material in its nearly 185 pages. I think this is due largely to the efficiency and power of coding in Python and Kivy, but also to the carefully-chosen projects the author selected for his readers to create. Despite several indentation issues in the example code and the many grammar issues typical of Packt's books, I can now recommend this book for intermediate to experienced Python programmers who are looking to get started with Kivy.

Chapter one is a good, quick introduction to a minimal Kivy app, layouts, widgets, and their properties.

Chapter two is an excellent introduction and exploration of basic canvas features and usage. This is often a difficult concept for beginners to understand, and this chapter handles it well.

Chapter three covers events and binding of events, but is much denser and difficult to grok than chapter two. It will likely require multiple reads of the chapter to get a good understanding of the topic, but if you're persistent, everything you need is there.

Chapter four contains a hodge-podge of Kivy user interface features. Screens and scatters are covered well, but gestures still feel like magic. I have yet to find a good in-depth explanation of gestures in Kivy, so this does not come as a surprise. Behaviors is a new feature in Kivy and a new section in this second edition of the book. Changing default styles is also covered in this chapter. The author does not talk about providing a custom atlas for styling, but presents an alternative method for theming involving Factories.

In chapter six the author does a good job of covering animations, and introduces sounds, the clock, and atlases. He brings these pieces together to build a version of Space Invaders, in about 500 lines of Python and KV. It ends up a bit code-dense, but the result is a fun game and a concise code base to play around with.

In chapter seven the author builds a TED video player including subtitles and an Android actionbar. There is perhaps too much attention paid to the VideoPlayer widget, but the resulting application is a useful base for creating other video applications.

Very good introduction. There is tons of example code to refer back to. Tying each chapter to a complete Kivy project also helps build knowledge on how to put Kivy into action. I will definitely use this as a reference to keep fresh on Kivy concepts.
