Very USEFUL

This book gives a smooth, motivated and example-rich

introduction to clustering, which is innovative in many aspects.

Answers to important questions that are very rarely addressed if

addressed at all, are provided.

Examples:

(a) what to do if the user has no idea of the number

of clusters and/or their location - use what is called intelligent k-means;

(b) what to do if the data contain both numeric and categorical

features - use what is called three-step standardization procedure;

(c) how to catch anomalous patterns, (d) how to validate clusters, etc.

Some of these may be subject to criticism, however some motivation is always

supplied, and the results are always reproducible thus testable.

The book introduces a number

of non-conventional cluster interpretation aids derived from a data

geometry view accepted by the author and based on what is referred

the contribution weights - basically showing those elements of cluster

structures that distinguish clusters from the rest. These contribution

weights, applied to categorical data, appear to be highly compatible

with what statisticians such as A. Quetelet and K. Pearson were developing

in the past couple of centuries, which is a highly original and welcome

development. The book reviews a rich set of approaches being accumulated

in such hot areas as text mining and bioinformatics, and shows that

clustering is not just a set of naive methods for data processing but

forms an evolving area of data science.

I adopted the book as a text for my courses in data mining for bachelor

and master degrees.

Clusters of Data, Not Micro Computer Clusters

First, understand that the type of clustering being discussed in this book is the statistical technique of finding clusters of data in a collection, where the collection is typically a database. This is not about clustered micro computers being used to work on big computational tasks as though it is a supercomputer.

Clusters of customers is a key area in data mining and knowledge discovery. You are usually trying to find groups of people with similar buying patterns but not necessarily identical. For instance if you have a group of people that have purchased a book on PHP, you might want to try to sell them a book on MySQL, or Apache, or Linnux. These programs fit together, but are not identical. Still the customer who purchased the PHP book is more likely to want a MySQL book than he is to want an audio CD of a murder mystery.

In this book, two of the most popular clustering techniques, K-Means and Ward's Method are presented. They are presented for a reader interested in the technical aspects of data mining as a theoretician or a practitioner. It is intended (the author says) that the material be useful to a reader with no mathematical background beyond high school. But the author also says, it might be of help if the reader is acquainted with basic notions of calculus, statistics, matrix algebra, graph theory and logic. (The author went to a different high school than I).

Clustering is described in this book to be used in a wide variety of applications, most of which are oriented to discovering social patterns, biological taxonomies, machine learning, etc. The book discusses the various techniques that have been developed and gives examples where they have been used in a wide variety of applications.

Talk and Social Theory is an inportant contribution to our understanding of everyday talk and its relation to broader social processes. Talk is unique and locally produced, crafted by particular social actors for the specific situation of its use. Yet the conduct of such talk is profoundly influenced by, and influential upon, social and cultural processes that occur beyond the temporal and spatial horizon of the occasion of the talk itself. Drawing on and criticizing social theory, Erickson explores the mutually reinforcing connections between the local conduct of talk and the general working of society, economy, and history.

The use of everyday examples enhances the appeal of Talk and Social Theory to a non-specialist as well as a specialist audience. Written in a clear and comprehensible way, it reviews key theoretical prospectives and conceptual frameworks in social theory and in the sociolinguistic study of talk. It concludes with an argument against overly determinist accounts of talk as social action, in the interest of better construction of social theory and better empirical study of talk.

Realistic and sweet

FEMME is a hi-lo book. Hi-lo books are written to appeal to struggling readers. They have content that appeals to teens, but are written at a range of lower reading levels. FEMME is written at an approximately third-grade reading level. I really appreciate that SideStreets and Mette Bach are making LGBT stories available for readers who are still developing their skills, since there isn't much reading material on the subject available below a high-school reading level.

Sofia, the protagonist of FEMME, doesn't feel like she has much going for herself aside from her popular boyfriend Paul. When her English teacher pairs her with class genius Clea, Sofia is worried about being judged for being dumb. But the two girls end up being fast friends and Clea helps Sofia nurture her study skills. In fact, the two girls decide to take a trip to the US together and look at schools in Portland. Clea wants to go to Portland because she's a lesbian - the only out one at their Canadian high school - and she wants to find a community that she fits into. To Sofia's surprise, she starts to find where she fits too.

FEMME might be simply written, but it is also sensitively written. Sofia and Clea feel like real teenage girls, particularly Sofia. She begins the novel shallow, with low self-esteem, but she makes amazing strides throughout the story. And even though the page count is short, Bach doesn't just tackle a romance. She tackles issues of identity involving sexuality, race, and class. There is a subplot about cyberbullying too. It all moves by quickly. However, while things are lightly covered, they don't feel lightweight.

FEMME is a novel that fills a niche that desperately needs something. Fortunately, there's much more reason to read it than just because it feels a need. It's got wonderful characters, a strong setting, and it tackles real-world issues in a manner that is positive but not treacly. I found FEMME to be surprisingly sweet.

I was given a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Before I start this, let me explain the situation. I'm reading about 10 other books and I get this email from Netgalley asking about reading and reviewing this one. I dropped everything else I was reading, because I do what I want, and started reading this one.

After first, I wasn't sure how I feel about it or what to expect. Sofie was so ... superficial. And I don't mean to judge, but people like that frustrate me. I was interested, but it wasn't clicking. I was really hoping something would pick up.

And it did... once Clea is introduced.

Being able to read as a young adult experiences the realization that she is attracted to someone of the same sex and the consequences that come from admitting it to those around her, it was both heart breaking and exciting. I enjoyed the romance aspect and how the characters change throughout the story. Even if it was totally cheesy.

I highly recommend this book. It has feels, romance, and I adored it.

very general, main text a let down

As a general reader with a computer science background I can only give my personal review. I got the book today, it arrived from the states to Ireland slightly dog eared. I am a bit annoyed that Amazon could not do better with the packaging. As for the book its quite a big book with lots of pictures in colour and black and white. However after going through the main text for several hours I think the person who gave 5 stars to this book got it completely wrong. The text is quite general and although it covers a vast range of artists and genres, the text is not particularly thought provoking and I cant see how any reader will read all 327 pages. The book seems expensive and its generally aimed as a college course. I'm a bit disappointed and seriously could not recommend the book unless you want to flick through an expensive book looking at pictures. I would have to go with the 3 star ranking based on the number of paintings covered

Buy the Kindle. "Just Do IT"

I failed this exam but here's why: First, I don't like these Exam Ref books due to their inconsistency in providing depth. I knew this going in and read this first and not expecting much; it was and is a quick read. I then dived into Pluralsight and CBTNuggets and Anderseid's blog and SharePointArron's. I read it all. I read the ADFS section in MOC20412D - well worth it. I have my own tenant and experimented on that.

I failed mostly because of DIRSync and that's my fault. While prepping and leading up to the exam I used this ref book but skipped the section on DIRSync. I instead focused some on AADConnect and not much else due to MS updating the tool. When I went back and read this chapter those questions were answered in the book.

I think this is the first Exam Ref book that's worth it for a frist read and the days leading up to the exam. Read it cover to cover and understand what's going on and you may pass. I'm to eschedule and I'll pass that retake - I just have to perform exactly the same.

If anyone is curious this isn't my first my exam. I'm A+ and MCSA 7/8 certified. Though I should have checked the exam criteria a little more closely. Goodluck!

Good Starting Point for the first exam 70-346

Been through the book, and going to take my exam soon. This book will provide you with a excellent foundation for the exam. The information in the book is laid out in a nice logical manner with plenty of screen shots. The author does a good job of explaining the material in a easy way. You should not have a problem following the book.

That being said, before you take the exam you should have some hands on experience to help with the concepts and I always recommend some additional exam prep like exam practice exams to ensure that you have everything down. Write down and really know your powershell commands.

Just passed the 70-346 exam on the first try. Good book, easy to read, covers all the topics. Read this book, watched some CBTNuggets videos, , had some hands on experience, passed the test first try. Do sign up for a free trial O365 subscription because Microsoft does move things around and you will want to know where you need click to pass the test.

Essential item for guitar playing Prototype's fan

If you are viewing this item, then you are most likely already a fan of Prototype, so I don't need to tell you about the awesomeness of their music and I'll just write only the bits related to the actual SongBook.

TLDR: A must have item for any Prototype's fan dabbling in guitar! Some tinkering is required to achieve most comfortable experience though...

1. Actual tabs: tabs quality is perfect! It not only contains lead and rhythm part, but also overdubs, so you may play all your favourite parts of the songs! Have I mentioned that tabs are as synced with the actual track as they could be? Now I have ;)
2. Performance notes: do not let the boring title make you skip these sections - they actually contain some bits of information, that let you see inside the process of making the songs, and as a fan you should know the value of that =)
3. Execution: The tabs are written .gp5 style, so they are easy to read, but there are some minor problems in other areas. The kindle book format is not really suitable for tabs, which means that converting it to .pdf or printing is a must. Another problem is that the text is not actually the text, but an image, and it seems that it was compressed with .jpg. Because of this the text and tabs are not as crisp as they could be (which kinda makes me sad).

PS: You should beware that some tabs(all the songs from Catalyst album) are for the 7-string guitar, so, if you are like me and have only a 6-string (T_T), you'll have to transpose tabs to be able to play them.

An ungainly hybrid, she operates in the late years of the century as a mere tramp freighter among the outer planets, and her crew is a motley group of misfits. Stepan Gorgas is the escapist executive officer who becomes captain. Ramakrishnan Bhatterji is the chief engineer who disdains him. Eugenie Satterwaithe, once a captain herself, is third officer and, for form's sake, sailing master.

When an unlikely and catastrophic engine failure strikes The River, Bhatterji is confident he can effect repairs with heroic engineering, but Satterwaithe and the other sailors among the crew plot to save her with a glorious last gasp for the old ways, mesmerized by a vision of arriving at Jupiter proudly under sail. The story of their doom has the power, the poetry, and the inevitability of a Greek tragedy. This is a great science fiction novel, Flynn's best yet.

The best hard-SF tragic novel of character yet written.

The MSS "River of Stars", the grandest of the great magsail liners, was launched in 2051. But the new Farnsworth fusion thrusters rang the death-knell for the magsails, and the now-obsolete liner was converted to fusion power in 2084. Two decades later, she has become a tramp freighter, bound for Dinwoody Poke, Jupiter space, on what will be her final voyage....

The Middle System -- Mars, the Belt, Jupiter space -- has not developed tidily, and the crew is made up of casualties of the great 21st-century space boom. RIVER is their story.

RIVER is a tour de force of character developement. We watch, riveted, as these motley misfits squabble, beef and try to cope, in the hermetic isolation of a ship becalmed in space -- two of the four Farnsworth engines have been ruined in a freak accident. The ship has 19 days to rebuild the engines, or she will pass the balk line, the point of no return, and drift endlessly away from settled space.

The repairs go slowly, but the ship's Engineer is a master of improvisation, and no one doubts he will fix the engines in time. No one, that is, but the oldest magsailors, who remember that the RIVER still has her old sails, unused for decades. They decide to fix them up, just in case. No one likes, or trusts, the acting captain, so they don't tell him (or the Engineer) their plan -- which has a large share of nostalgia for the lost Age of Sail. And there isn't enough superconducting hobartium on board to repair both engines and sails....

RIVER is a classical tragedy. Hubris, small mistakes, misunderstandings, mishaps and personal conflicts collide, echo and feed back in a downward spiral that will ultimately wreck the great ship. It wouldn't be fair to reveal the ending, but it's not a happy one. There are no real villains here, just flawed people trying to cope, at times heroically. But the Fates are not on their side.

Flynn tells his story in the third-person omniscient, with dry asides as he develops his characters. The omniscient narrator is the Greek chorus to the inevitable tragedy, which develops with an awful majesty. Flynn's writing is masterful. His pacing is grave, controlled, ironic. His characters will break your heart as they work, love, fight, grow, grieve and die. This is a wonderful book, easily Flynn's best. RIVER is set in the future of Flynn's popular near-future "Star" tetrology (also recommended), but is a standalone novel. This is the best hard-SF tragic novel of character yet written (though this is an uncrowded niche). And the cover art, by Stephan Martiniere, is just flat gorgeous. Highly recommended.

Top-notch science fiction

I'm surprised that this book hasn't received more attention. It's an absolutely outstanding novel and is that rare case of genre fiction that transcends its genre and qualifies as literature. The story is simple --- the title says it all --- but compelling and the characterization, narration, and dialogue are sharp and intelligent. Best of all, the characters drive the story, rather than the other way around (a common failing in sf, where ideas are typically much more interesting than people). The entire novel takes place on The River of Stars, a Jovian merchant ship that has seen better days. Its crew and a single passenger are the only characters, and their backgrounds and interactions propel the story to its tragic conclusion. There are very few missteps in this book. I can think of two: that the characters of Corrigan and Gorgas seem fuzzily delineated (were they a single character in an earlier draft?) and that mysterious events in the pasts of the crew are somewhat abruptly and implausibly revealed at the end of the book. These are minor, however, given the overall success of the novel, which I highly recommend.

Requires HUGE Patience but Rewards

WHY YOU SHOULD READ:

Readers who delight working out puzzles involving people, this is an excellent book. As a study of group dynamics and clashing personality types within a disaster setting there really is nothing else like it in the genre. A good segment of the reading public would be those people who enjoy reading mysteries not so much for the dénouement but rather for how the various parties think and act would adore River. Also, those readers steeped in religion will find the allegorical implications of people operating in the absence of God profoundly affected by the ending of this tale.

WHY YOU SHOULD PASS:

This book requires an incredible amount of patience. There will be times that even these most patient readers will be tempted to give up and move on. The detailed examination of each and every crewmember plus their motivations and desires is so exhaustive and so unrelenting that you've really got to be into this kind of thing to even venture into the River. The plot moves at about the same pace as the stars wheel in the sky. For those readers who have blazed through English Lit courses in college, River reads, for good or ill, very much like a Henry James novel--horribly trying but with immense rewards. If you are the sort of reader who looks for immediate payoff--and that, without being insulting, is certainly a large body of the speculative fiction reading public--then you should look for something else.
