I remember the first time I met Chris Scott, on a cold Colorado morning near Durango.  He had decided to fly all the way to the US to buy an inflatable kayak, a plan that would save him nearly the cost of the trip in taxes and shipping. As a traveler and editor, Chris is infinitely likable, and not because of his extensive experience (which he has in spades), but because of his honest, genuine and simple approach to equipment, vehicles and travel. Even a casual review of Chris' travels show a fantastic diversity and infinite practicality. From traveling in Australia by BMW motorcycle to bouncing around Morocco in a Mercedes sedan, Chris has made a lifetime emphasis on the pursuit of approachable adventuring. It is that emphasis that makes the Adventure Motorcycling Handbook so incredibly valuable. It is not a glossy sales brochure for Triumph or BMW, but a gritty, honest, hard won review of what actually works and what you really need to ride a motorcycle overland. 

The Adventure Motorcycle Handbook follows a logical review of pursuing moto travel, starting with planning and preparation before selecting a bike and then ultimately living on the road and selecting individual routes.  Chris does a great job of interjecting the thoughts, musings and opinions of other experts, all lending to a broader perspective and more interesting read. Lots of new material in the 6th edition...

Even if you have a well worn copy of the last edition, it's worth upgrading to the latest (Nov, 2012 - 6th ed) of the AMH. Tons of new material and the same solid format that made this book great in the first place. Buy the book, read the book, ride out to an Overland Expo or a Horizons Unlimited meetup, do a few exploratory journeys (mostly to see how *little* you need to be comfortable on the road then go for it...

A spectacular reference for Adventure Motorcycling

This book makes me want to hop on a motorcycle and ride everywhere! This book gives the aspiring ADV rider the recommendations necessary to get going. It's suggestions are extensive and cover many things that would have otherwise been overlooked (travel visas, international insurance, carnets, etc).

I've found it very easy to read for both short and long stints. It's spectacularly well-edited, you rarely find yourself having to turn the page to read the last two sentences of a section before putting the book down. The writing is concise and gives examples and alternatives that might be helpful to riders of all skill levels.

If you're even a bit interested in overland travel via motorcycle you should absolutely get this book. You won't be disappointed.

This, my Haynes manual, and 'Proficient Motorcycling'... all great books for someone who just bought a bike and honestly intends on doing something with it. I have been through it once, and I'm going back making notes for my upcoming TransAmerica Trail trip.

Why the change? Could those segregation laws have had a basis in something other than hate? Could the people of 1910 Baltimore have understood something about differences in racial behavior, differences reflected in the despondent conditions of the city only one hundred years later.

The Book You need to read after Watching "The Wire"

So Baltimore is pretty much just like Detroit, only much, much worse off. Well-formatted book, with accessible table of contents make this is an five-star rating!

Only problem: book seriously needs an index (all of Kersey's book do). But this book needs an index b/c a lot of the individuals, like former Mayor Kurt Schmoke and Martin O'Malley are such interesting characters and you want to read about their exploits instead of thumbing through the book trying to locate their names.

Pure crap

I am a native Baltimorean and a professor emeritus of political science who has written two books and a number of articles about the city. This book is pure crap. I regret having wasted my money on it. Kersey has a formula that he applies unthinkingly to one city after another. He has created a market niche by posing as a professional racist. I'm not entirely convinced that even he believes the garbage that he sells.

Exhilerating Extreme White Water Kayaking Adventure

Reason for Reading: The plot sounded exciting and I am a fan of this publisher, trusting their book selection when I haven't heard of the author before.

Excellent. A superb adventure story that should especially touch reluctant male teen readers. This is an exciting rush of adrenaline from start to finish. 17-year-old Rex is an expert whitewater kayaker taking after his grandfather who raised him along with his mother. His grandfather was well-known in his day for making many first descents down rivers in South America but ended his career when local Natives chased him out of an area of Colombia leaving El Furioso unconquered to this day. Rex promises to finish his grandfather's legacy by making this his first "first descent" and heads off to Colombia without anyone in his family really understanding the political situation in that area. Hiring a local indigenous girl, 17-year-old Myriam, to be his guide he finds himself not only facing man vs. nature as he shoots extreme rapids but man vs man when he learns the plight of the indigena out in the wilderness caught between the paramilitary and guerrilla soldiers.

An eye-opening story of culture clashes and world social problems that do not make headline news but should be known and addressed globally. Interesting characters that are real and relatable to teens. I found both Rex and Myriam to be likable teens, flawed and each developed throughout the story. I'm not usually into this type of "political situation" novel but am very fond of outdoor adventure/survival stories and found the political situation only enhanced the exhilaration of the plot. A great library pick!

A thrill ride!

A riveting and action packed book for all ages! Let me begin by saying I am a novice when it comes to kayaking, but that didn't stop me from thoroughly enjoying this book. The author does a fine job with drawing the reader in and you feel as though you are riding the white waters along with Rex. Another excellent detail of the book is drawing a vivid image of what life is like in a country where you never feel safe, something many of us take for granted.

Rex is tired of living in his grandfather's shadow and feeling like he always has to prove himself to his elder. His grandfather is a world renown kayaker but he has one section of a river in Columbia which he gave up and did not achieve his first descent. This is the river that Rex intends to tame and claim the first descent for himself. After traveling to Columbia, Rex finds an indigena girl to be his guide along the most difficult part of the river. Rex and his fellow kayakers are accepted into Miriam's village and learn what life is like for them, but Rex refuses to acknowledge the dangers looming all around him. But he can't ignore them when he himself becomes the target and must find a way to escape from something much more dangerous than the river he came to run.

I recommend this book for readers of all ages and genre types. I would have read this book in one sitting if I could have found a way. The book grabs your attention early and hangs on with a death grasp! Excellent book! I look forward to reading more by this author!(

Well-written book. The story starts slow and steady then builds up to an exciting end. There is a lot of info regarding the location in Columbia and the way of life of the people there. And the author has so much detail regarding kayaking, it makes me want to try it myself! Teens should like this book.
