Highly recommended. Shame about the price

The first part of this book is a lucid introduction to classical differential geometry from the Frenet formulas to Riemannian manifolds, via Gauss curvature, metric coefficients, connections, geodesics and the curvature tensor, with many well-motivated examples and exercises. If you have a working knowledge of basic linear algebra and multivariable calculus you should have no trouble with any of this.
The remainder (two-thirds of the book) provides one of the most readable introductions to special and general relativity that I have ever come across. Because of the geometric approach, modest prerequisites and limited space, there is no treatment of relativistic mechanics, electrodynamics or the 'matter' field equations, and actually no formal development of tensor calculus. Within these constraints, it is amazing what the author does manage to cover. You will be led easily through the vacuum field equations, Schwarzschild solution, perihelion precession, light-bending ...
If this book had been twice the length - more comprehensive but in the same style - it could have been a classic. As it is, it does not seem to be anywhere near as widely used as it deserves to be .. Surely this is a prime candidate for a ..Dover edition? Until then, get it from the library.

A very accessible book - well worth a look

This book comprises two sections. The first section develops the tools of classical differential geometry with a thorough treatment of 2D surfaces embedded in a 3D space. First and second fundamental forms are introduced and their relationships analysed. This leads into the usual realms - Christoffel symbols, connections and the Riemann Curvature Tensor.A very readable account of Gauss's Theorem Egregium is presented - it's great!. Finally, more abstract manifolds are presented.I worked thoroughly through the first half of this book.There are many good exercises.This volume is cited a number of times In Gregory L. Naber's 'Spacetime and Singularities'- a more difficult book. I found Faber's volume of real help when studying the latter(which has loads of exercises and problems but no hints/partial solutions at all). The second section is an introduction to Special and General Relativity. I have to confess I did not study this half as I had already covered the material presented in this section elsewhere. The first half of the book gives a very good feel for curved space and is fitting preparation for the second half if the material presented there is new to you.. A good little book for independent study.

I've read (attempted to read) a number of books on general relativity, including the elementary texts (Schutz, others), the introductions for mathematicians (Lee), books on tensors, web intros, .... and the only one that I've been able gain any traction with is this book. And, I'm not exactly unprepared, as I have a MS in math and have worked a number of years as an engineer, much of the time doing inertial nav and other presumably related work. Yet, the other GR books have completely baffled me. Warning ... if you start a book and there is a long section on tensors .... look out... or you'll soon be playing a game of 'find the pea (relativity)' and it will be under plenty of thick mattresses (tensor analysis being but one). This book develops all the machinery using a 2-d surface embedded in 3-d. This is the way to go, no question in my mind. There is a degree of concreteness to counter the endless poliferation of new symbols and notation. Then there is a good (could have been better see the Calculus Without Tears web page) intro to special relativity. And then .... before you've finished breakfast ... field equations... which I'm working on now. If not for this book, I might have given up on my latest hobby, GR.

For example ... spacetime is curved? Yes. Hard to visualize? No. Throw a ball ... look at the arc .... there it is. Calculate the curvature? Easy... no tensors, field equations, differentials. Of course, even Faber waits till page 274 for this little demonstration, and he could have put it on page 1... still, it's there.

Just-in-Time (JIT) production methods are the rage, as non-Japanese companies attempt to mimic Oriental manufacturers (see Edward J. Hay, The Just in Time Breakthrough , LJ 4/15/88). These methods originated at the Toyota Co. after World War II, and Ohno is philosophical father of the techniques. This volume represents the English translation of his original commentaries, first published in Japan in 1978. More a philosophical commentary and history than an applications manual, it not only presents compelling examples of JIT implementation at Toyota, but also illustrates the mindset behind the system, especially the critical importance of teamwork and the premeditated effort to develop automation with a human touch. Best Manufacturing Book Ever

After 30 years of manufacturing experience and thinking that I was very knowledgeable of Lean Manufacturing systems, it came to my surprise that one book written almost 30 years ago would teach me all the things I take now for granted without knowing that all this knowledge came from the mind of one man and his fellows at Toyota. My hat is down for Mr. Taiichi Onno. I now have a better understanding of his teachings and I believe that the Toyota Production System will be the do facto standard for manufacturing in the years to follow. I wonder if it is ready for and ISO standard...

A treasure to high management

I really enjoyed reading Mr. Ohno's book. Even though it is a short book, it is full of ideas that can be applied to any production bussiness.
Even though that the system was created for a car production facility, the concept of "waste" is useful to any type of manufacturing. This idea, coupled with the concept of producing exactly what is sold ( or what the client requests )allows any company to became profitable in times when profit margins get narrower and narrower.

Ha ha, I just reread this

I used to love Sweet Valley High books as a child. I would wait breathlessly for them to come out every month and sometimes cry if they didn't come out on the expected date. (Yes, I had too much spare time). This mini-series, especially had me on the edge of my seat.
Recently, I got this book for a buck off e-bay for nostalgic purposes and just for kicks. I have a couple of things to say about it now.
The plot is generic drama. Elizabeth and Jessica are preparing for a beach party the very special night that Jessica gets "the perfect tan" and inspiration strikes. They can have a jungle themed prom and have a popular environmental group sponsor it!!!!!!!!! They go to expand on the idea and fringe benefits such as a trip to Brazil and a position as a spokesperson for a greener world are offered to the future prom queen.
Therefore, Jessica and Elizabeth begin a bitter quarrel for the title of prom queen where compromise is impossible. They act like this is more than a school dance, and is the antidote to their ridiculous, half developed personalities. This book breathlessly chronicals their angry showdown and throws in a couple of side stories involving Lila and Bruce and their own petty little problems involving death and attempted date-rape.
I couldn't believe how shallow and vapid my two favorite twins seemed. Jessica is really the most nauseatingly ego-tistical little idiot who floats through life forgetting about everything and expecting everything to come her way. Her entire attitude throughout the book is "OH, I can't wait to be prom queen!"
Unfortunately, Elizabeth wasn't much better. She tilted off keel on the other extreme from freaking out about small things. (Her sister was dared to swim out to the buoy at a beach party and Elizabeth ran up and down the beach trying to figure out how to save her poor little sister swimming in the dark ocean. She even decided to go borrow this guy's surf board and paddle out and get her.) I read that and thought, oh come on...
Then we come to the finale. Everything happens like it was stacked like a triple helping of fate served up in the stars. Jessica spikes Elizabeth's drink, with what? Rubbing alcohol? I can't think of half a glass of anything, even hard liquor that would mess someone up so severely that they couldn't walk and were slurring their words in such a drunken way. So how big was that punch cup?? Because from what I remember, most punch glasses aren't very big.
And the ending..what are the chances of that really happening? Oh well, this is a young adult novel.
As a sidenote, I was pleasantly surprised by some of the secondary characters. Lila actually made pretty good sense most of the time. I almost applauded her when she was sunbathing in Jessica's backyard, and she mentally commented on how "immature and nauseating" Jessica's behavior actually was. Bruce wasn't so bad either.

You *KNOW* Things Are Bad When You Like LILA'S Storyline!

Same old, same old. There's your general recap "here's what's happened lately, because yes, if you're reading book 100, you naturally haven't read everything before it!" Liz acts completely out of character throughout the entire book, from coming up with the jungle prom, to battling it out for prom queen. It's seriously sad, never before in the series has Lila actually been likable to me until this book, where her storyline was the only one I found even remotely interesting. It's also annoying how much the foreshadowing is repeated--nobody could miss this stuff. Yes, yes, we GET that they don't know they're running against each other. We get that they hate each other. Stop hammering it over our heads!
Maybe what ruined this for me was the fact that I read all the sequels to the miniseries before I actually read this one. No suspense for me!

Leaves you hanging. . .

I think this is a really good book. The Twins are helping to plan, what is expected to be, Sweet Valley High's best Prom ever. It is decided that there should be a King and Queen for the Dance. Jessica is prepared to win. . . and so is Elizabeth. Someone spikes Elizabeth's drink at the dance and she starts to act really strangely. Sam and Elizabeth are getting closer and Jessica dosen't like it at all. Elizabeth is seen leaving with Sam and Jessica becomes worried. She knows that there might be trouble if Elizabeth decides to take the jeep somewhere with Sam. Joe Minichino is a computer vision engineer for Hoolux Medical by day and a developer of the NoSQL database LokiJS by night. On weekends, he is a heavy metal singer/songwriter. He is a passionate programmer who is immensely curious about programming languages and technologies and constantly experiments with them. At Hoolux, Joe leads the development of an Android computer vision-based advertising platform for the medical industry. Born and raised in Varese, Lombardy, Italy, and coming from a humanistic background in philosophy (at Milan's Universita Statale), Joe has spent his last 11 years living in Cork, Ireland, which is where he became a computer science graduate at the Cork Institute of Technology.

Joseph Howse lives in Canada. During the winters, he grows his beard, while his four cats grow their thick coats of fur. Great resource if you are a Python user that wants to start learning computer vision concepts and implementation

This book is a great introduction to both computer vision in general, and OpenCV in Python in particular, but even people familiar with computer vision methods will find it useful to learn how to implement them in the Python ecosystem or how to optimize function parameters. An introductory to intermediate command of Python is assumed. The author's present the different concepts within the context of developing an application, and while the book doesn't follow the cookbook format, by the end you will still have a group of very useful scripts that can easily be applied to other projects. The presentation of the programming scripts is detailed and easy to follow. The authors have taken great care to build the complexity of the scripts slowly and without gaps in the sequencing. The use of each script is very well illustrated with images along the book. My only complaint is that the book is still based on Python 2.7, but the code doesn't seem to require many modifications to run in Python 3

Learning OpenCV 3 Computer Vision with Python - Second Edition

I have done programming in python and was interested in learning OpenCV. This book did great job in introducing the basic computer Vision programming using python. OpenCV 3 is a computer vision library that is used for a variety of image and video processing operations. Some advance features such as face recognition or object tracking, are easily achievable with OpenCV 3.

Overall, I found the book was easy to follow and it even included code examples from the book.

This is one of the best books on narrow footprint houses. Page after page of some of the most interesting examples of narrow footprint houses that are not row, or town houses. There are plenty of photos and floor plans to see. A great source for examples of houses for narrow lots, or tiny sites.

"Narrow Houses: New Directions in Efficient Design" by Avi Friedman (Princeton Architectural Press) deal with another kind of situation altogether. The shoebox home. Defining `narrow' as a structure with a street-facing facade of 25 feet or less, Friedman highlights a broad array of solutions for maximizing usable space while creating the necessary flow for the limited environment.

Houses from Amsterdam to Japan (where one pictured home is a mere nine feet wide!) are showcased, many using the latest modern, cutting edge design, but all with a mind towards maximizing use of open space, vertical integration and that ever elusive `flow' to make things seem imminently livable despite the cramped space. Lots of stairways and glass windows and walls are used to open up these spaces, as Friedman cites examples from freestanding structures to rows of tiny fronted townhomes.

Beyond the examples, Friedman explains the reasoning behind the re-emergence of the narrow home movement in terms of environment and economic and social impact as well as the issues to be aware of (footprint, duplexes, yard space, etc.) when dealing with this type of development. As urban areas get more crowded, (though narrow homes are even expanding to suburban and certain rural areas), the issues presented here will become more and more useful to builders everywhere. Depending where you are on the continuum, you may already be there. If not, read up.

Valuable review of the dog-deafness biology; nearly useless for us ordinary owners of deaf dogs and cats

At roughly One dollar per text page of the hardcover, it is probably beyond the reach of all but students who must purchase assigned textbooks. The paperback at about $50, for 124 text pages (not counting indexes & references, etc) might be useful for DVMs when copies begin to show up, as they will, in the used book category.

Of the paperback roughly 116 pages are dedicated to the technology and biology details, which will be essentially useless to us ordinary owners of deaf dogs and cats - Only eight (8) of the 124 text pages provided a fast trot through what appear to be opinions and biases of the author almost entirely unsupported by research references,in contrast to the thoroughly referenced scientific aspects of the biology. As a professional courtesy, I urge extending to Dr Strain a presumption that his opinions and biases legitamately emerged from the unique and peculiar conditions of the motivations and means involved in his dog-deafness research.

Dr Strain obliquely and very briefly briefly dealt with the roughly eight additional hearing modalities used by deaf and ordinary dogs, rarely used much by humans; as also discussed at great length about 2004 by Dr Coren. The new book reviewed here was almost entirely limited in scope to the biology and testing of dogs for the range of sound frequencies and volumes that are ordinarily used by normal humans. However, as pointed out by Dr Coren and others dogs and cats aren't limited to the biological modalities used by ordinary humans, and indeed possessed in the other modalities for perhaps 10,000 years a remarkable set of additional mechanisms for detecting, analysing and reacting to ambient mechanical wave motions [sound] in the local media (air, etc.)

Serious persons desiring to live with, train and enjoy the companionship of a deaf dog, I strongly urge seeking out and obtaining the advice and wisdom of the over 3,000 owners of deaf dogs, who via Yahoo share knowledge on the Internet. As mentioned by Dr Strain in his few pages about managing and training deaf dogs, his opinions and biases were (are) controversial, and possibly largely outdated, although perhaps based on his anecdotes

Too many projections and too little knowledge of dogs

As a behavior person, I will start this review by stating that I've only read Chapter 8 of this book. My review is an assessment only of Chapter 8, I can only hope that the rest of the book is of better quality -- and less obviously pushing a misguided personal agenda.

This chapter creates the impression that it is the author's ambition to eliminate deafness in dogs. The problem with this is that Strain seems to prefer to do that by eliminating the dogs themselves, rather than the more effective and humane techniques and tactics (eg, sterilization and abandoning breeding for coat colors known to be associated with deafness).

This chapter does not do a good job of explaining the realities of deaf dogs and how to help them have good quality of life. In fact, it seems the author doesn't much understand the reality of the domestic dog at all, thus also not of deaf domestic dogs. He lays a direct causal link between deafness and behavior where there really is none. He misinterprets normal dog behavior and body language, projecting his own thoughts onto dogs (anthropomorphizing) - then attributes these projected motives to the dog's deafness. An example of this is the author's interpretation of the deaf dog averting its gaze from an angry owner. This is an appeasement signal in the domestic dog, but Strain doesn't seem to know this. Instead, he tells us that the deaf dog is looking away with the thought `If [I] don't see the admonition, it must not have happened' - a kind of stubbornness. Though he points to the need to socialize a deaf dog, the author's recommendations for keeping a deaf dog are likely to prevent adequate socialization of the dog. Some of these recommendations (eg tying the deaf dog out on a stake) are known to increase the risk that any dog, deaf or not, will bite at some point. Yet the author persists in blaming the results of human actions - ones that would handicap or provoke any dog - on the dog's deafness.

This author clearly knows too little about the behavior of dogs in general to be telling us what might be different about the behavior of deaf dogs in particular. He clearly understands too little about how human behavior influences the behavior of any dog, deaf or otherwise. As Strain sees it: Any teased or tormented dog might bite, but if the deaf ones does, it's because he's deaf. In fact, it seems that any behavior Strain doesn't like in a deaf dog must be because the dog is deaf.

The chapter ends with some seemingly belatedly acquired insights about how to humanely help deaf dogs. This ending comes across as an attempt to respond to criticism the author has perhaps received for previous work, but it's not convincing. Real acceptance of these insights, and real understanding of them, would have meant this chapter was written differently. The author would have been more focused on showing that deaf dogs might be more vulnerable to human misbehavior than hearing dogs (in particular when a human assumes a deaf dog isn't obeying because he's `dominant' or `stubborn'). He would have made clear that they are not inherently more dangerous than hearing dogs. He would have emphasized that a deaf dog can be as reliable a companion as any other dog of the same type or breed.

In summary: Strain seems more concerned with persuading us to kill deaf dogs than with increasing our understanding of them and thus improving their welfare. The author seems unequipped to help us with the latter points because it looks like he hasn't bothered to understand dogs as such, which is certainly a prerequisite to understanding deaf dogs. The author would have done better to leave the analysis of behavior and recommendations on how to deal with it to more knowledgeable people. The same goes for his legal warnings, which aren't accurate and were better left to a lawyer. As it is, this chapter is likely to do deaf dogs and their owners unnecessary harm rather than good, while at the same time contributing nothing significant to eradicating deafness.

Disabilities in dogs and cats

this book took what seemed to me to be a very archaic approach to deaf animals in that they should be not be kept as pets (aka exterminated). Cesar Milan (dog whisperer) as well as Web MD ([...] have some very good information on owning and living with deaf pets. Not that a deaf dog is never dangerous but a hearing one can be too.......carte blanche approaches about disabilities hark back to a different time
