Valuable review of the dog-deafness biology; nearly useless for us ordinary owners of deaf dogs and cats

At roughly One dollar per text page of the hardcover, it is probably beyond the reach of all but students who must purchase assigned textbooks. The paperback at about $50, for 124 text pages (not counting indexes & references, etc) might be useful for DVMs when copies begin to show up, as they will, in the used book category.
Of the paperback roughly 116 pages are dedicated to the technology and biology details, which will be essentially useless to us ordinary owners of deaf dogs and cats - Only eight (8) of the 124 text pages provided a fast trot through what appear to be opinions and biases of the author almost entirely unsupported by research references,in contrast to the thoroughly referenced scientific aspects of the biology. As a professional courtesy, I urge extending to Dr Strain a presumption that his opinions and biases legitamately emerged from the unique and peculiar conditions of the motivations and means involved in his dog-deafness research.
Dr Strain obliquely and very briefly briefly dealt with the roughly eight additional hearing modalities used by deaf and ordinary dogs, rarely used much by humans; as also discussed at great length about 2004 by Dr Coren. The new book reviewed here was almost entirely limited in scope to the biology and testing of dogs for the range of sound frequencies and volumes that are ordinarily used by normal humans. However, as pointed out by Dr Coren and others dogs and cats aren't limited to the biological modalities used by ordinary humans, and indeed possessed in the other modalities for perhaps 10,000 years a remarkable set of additional mechanisms for detecting, analysing and reacting to ambient mechanical wave motions [sound] in the local media (air, etc.)
Serious persons desiring to live with, train and enjoy the companionship of a deaf dog, I strongly urge seeking out and obtaining the advice and wisdom of the over 3,000 owners of deaf dogs, who via Yahoo share knowledge on the Internet. As mentioned by Dr Strain in his few pages about managing and training deaf dogs, his opinions and biases were (are) controversial, and possibly largely outdated, although perhaps based on his anecdotes

Too many projections and too little knowledge of dogs

As a behavior person, I will start this review by stating that I've only read Chapter 8 of this book. My review is an assessment only of Chapter 8, I can only hope that the rest of the book is of better quality -- and less obviously pushing a misguided personal agenda.
This chapter creates the impression that it is the author's ambition to eliminate deafness in dogs. The problem with this is that Strain seems to prefer to do that by eliminating the dogs themselves, rather than the more effective and humane techniques and tactics (eg, sterilization and abandoning breeding for coat colors known to be associated with deafness).
This chapter does not do a good job of explaining the realities of deaf dogs and how to help them have good quality of life. In fact, it seems the author doesn't much understand the reality of the domestic dog at all, thus also not of deaf domestic dogs. He lays a direct causal link between deafness and behavior where there really is none. He misinterprets normal dog behavior and body language, projecting his own thoughts onto dogs (anthropomorphizing) - then attributes these projected motives to the dog's deafness. An example of this is the author's interpretation of the deaf dog averting its gaze from an angry owner. This is an appeasement signal in the domestic dog, but Strain doesn't seem to know this. Instead, he tells us that the deaf dog is looking away with the thought `If [I] don't see the admonition, it must not have happened' - a kind of stubbornness. Though he points to the need to socialize a deaf dog, the author's recommendations for keeping a deaf dog are likely to prevent adequate socialization of the dog. Some of these recommendations (eg tying the deaf dog out on a stake) are known to increase the risk that any dog, deaf or not, will bite at some point. Yet the author persists in blaming the results of human actions - ones that would handicap or provoke any dog - on the dog's deafness.
This author clearly knows too little about the behavior of dogs in general to be telling us what might be different about the behavior of deaf dogs in particular. He clearly understands too little about how human behavior influences the behavior of any dog, deaf or otherwise. As Strain sees it: Any teased or tormented dog might bite, but if the deaf ones does, it's because he's deaf. In fact, it seems that any behavior Strain doesn't like in a deaf dog must be because the dog is deaf.
The chapter ends with some seemingly belatedly acquired insights about how to humanely help deaf dogs. This ending comes across as an attempt to respond to criticism the author has perhaps received for previous work, but it's not convincing. Real acceptance of these insights, and real understanding of them, would have meant this chapter was written differently. The author would have been more focused on showing that deaf dogs might be more vulnerable to human misbehavior than hearing dogs (in particular when a human assumes a deaf dog isn't obeying because he's `dominant' or `stubborn'). He would have made clear that they are not inherently more dangerous than hearing dogs. He would have emphasized that a deaf dog can be as reliable a companion as any other dog of the same type or breed.
In summary: Strain seems more concerned with persuading us to kill deaf dogs than with increasing our understanding of them and thus improving their welfare. The author seems unequipped to help us with the latter points because it looks like he hasn't bothered to understand dogs as such, which is certainly a prerequisite to understanding deaf dogs. The author would have done better to leave the analysis of behavior and recommendations on how to deal with it to more knowledgeable people. The same goes for his legal warnings, which aren't accurate and were better left to a lawyer. As it is, this chapter is likely to do deaf dogs and their owners unnecessary harm rather than good, while at the same time contributing nothing significant to eradicating deafness.

Disabilities in dogs and cats

this book took what seemed to me to be a very archaic approach to deaf animals in that they should be not be kept as pets (aka exterminated). Cesar Milan (dog whisperer) as well as Web MD ([...] have some very good information on owning and living with deaf pets. Not that a deaf dog is never dangerous but a hearing one can be too.......carte blanche approaches about disabilities hark back to a different time
