In an attempt to escape the withering gaze of the media and local townsfolk, Lacey retreats to a family cabin, where the neighbor happens to be Lefty Monroe, a Hugh Jackman–looking cop-turned-writer. From here on out, it's a fairly predictable bit of meeting and initial dislike melting into attraction, with awkward forays into a writing project Lacey undertakes. Though the leads and support cast are witty and well-done, the characters Lacey doesn't like--Mike, his mistress--are little more than caricatures, and the story loses much of its verve once the LaceyLefty romance kicks in.

Well rounded!

With the recent Chick Lit and Women's Fiction I've been reading there has been this great balance between the humor and silliness and the heartfelt and real emotions and the book And One Last Thing... is no exception.

The always horrible issue of cheating and divorce is made a lot easier to handle when main character Lacey sends out an email detailing her horrible husband's activities. The fallout of that is crazy! To protect herself and get away from it all she stays at a family cabin where she expects to find isolation...

But instead she finds a grumpy but attractive man that wants to be left alone. One thing I really liked about this book was the idea of these two people basically being isolated from everyone else so if they have interactions it's going to be with each other. I don't normally find that that happens a lot in books at least for this long of a time period.

I thought Lacey and Monroe's relationship was sweet, they are first friends helping each other out, specifically Monroe helps Lacey decide where her life should take her next and then they become more. I found this book to be a lot of fun. Lacey was surrounded by a great cast of secondary characters including her brother, the woman that her husband is having an affair with (I love how they almost have it out in a parking lot!) It's definitely making me want to check out the authors Jane Jameson series!

Molly Harper is chick-lit perfection

I would say that Molly Harper is a friend-defining author. She writes the types of books that you proudly pass along to friends and if they hand them back to you after reading and say, "I just didn't get it" or "I didn't find her all that funny" then they're ex-communicated. Cut-off! Cut adrift! Molly Harper just inspires that kind of loyalty and passion in her friends... and with good cause!

Molly Harper is a chick-lit-romance-genius. I fell in love with her and her `Jane Jameson' paranormal romance series. And in `One Last Thing...', her first contemporary romance, I fall a little bit more in love/creepy-stalker-reader-infatuation with Ms Harper...

`And One Last Thing...' is a story of crushing blows and fist-pumping feminism. Lacey Terwilliger has become a cliché at 30 when she discovers that her husband, Mike, has been boning his secretary. In a fit of rage she e-mails a newsletter detailing Mike's sexcapades to his colleagues, friends and family... and gets slapped with a divorce and lawsuit in the same day. Lacey's wronged-woman rant goes viral and Lacey has to escape the media furore in the wake of her lawsuit. She decides to play hermit in her grandmother's abandoned cabin where her solitary wallowing is interrupted by a handsome Hugh Jackman-lookalike called `Lefty' Monroe.

It is at the cabin that Lacey finds peace, orgasms, acceptance, guilt and her literay voice...

It's no secret that I love Molly Harper. Her `Jane Jameson' series made her an instant-buy author for me, `And One Last Thing...' reiterates why. Harper had me snorting and convulsing within the first chapter, and by the end of the book my stomach muscles were sore from belly-aching laughs.

How to describe Harper's acerbic wit? She's a little bit of everything I love and find funny, her characters speak a language I understand and march to the beat of a drum I can hear. Lacey and Jane Jameson's sense of humour (which is ultimately Molly Harper's humour) is a dash of Veronica Mars, a splash of Gilmore Girls, a head-nod to Joss Whedon and a salute to Tina Fey. Screw `whiskers on kittens', those funnies are a few of my favourite things!

Molly Harper changes genres from `paranormal' to `contemporary' and loses none of her writing flavour. She seems to enjoy putting her female heroines through the emotional ringer; tearing them down only to make building them up that much sweeter to read. Lacey is absolutely put through her paces in the beginning of the book; lamenting everything about her marriage from Mike's cheating, to their stilted love-life (he thought `racy' was having sex in a camping tent). Harper isn't afraid to write what every woman thinks (at least once in her life) - everything from secretly despising `earth tones' in the home, to navigating the purchase of a vibrator.

And then, for Lacey, Monroe walks onto the scene.... right when she is at her most emotional and irrational, a hunky Wolverine-looking next-door-neighbour is dropped into her lap and things perk up. Monroe and Lacey are H-O-T, but I mostly loved them because their repartee was high-notch and hilarious. They bounce off of one another effortlessly and their scenes are fantastic!

I'm not surprised that I loved `And One Last Thing...'. Molly Harper rules, and I am embedded in her fan-club. She writes funny like it's nobody's business, and her romances are lush to read.

Always delightful author & narrator!

As always the combination of Author Molly Harper and narrator Amanda Ronconi is delightful!!

I loved this book from beginning to end! Lacey has such a snarky wit that is is easy to adore her! She really has some growth through the book and I was more than happy with the end result!!

To me the newsletter was a real "you go girl" moment. I probably would have done the same thing!

There are many fabulous supporting characters here and in typical Harper fashion a quirky but relateable vibe prevails.

I would love to see more for this, perhaps stories for her friends Sam and Maya. I would definitely be interested in those!

Fans of Ms Harper's Paranormal series may be slightly jarred by this book. No Vamps, Weres or supernatural of any sort, however it stays true to her delightfully snarky voice!! I really enjoyed it and found the story extremely entertaining. Sure the romance takes a back burner from most of the book, but I really felt it was Lacey's story on the Lacey and Monroe romance. It was about her finding herself again and discovering that she could in fact find a way to love and forgive.

Really great storytelling and wonderful reading!

Finding meaning in Paper Cranes - a beautifully written MUST read!

This is an absolute must read from an incredibly talented writer which draws inspiration from a Japanese legend about Paper Cranes.

In Chasing Paper Cranes Courtney Peppernell literally writes life, in all of its truest and rawest form. She finds the beauty and honesty in connections and then digs deep into them and explores them with her words. One of my favourite lines comes early in the novel when the protagonist Layla tells the reader:
“As bruised as my heart felt, I was realising that the things we haven’t learnt about ourselves are the very things other people come into our lives to teach.”

In reality though, this I'd just one beautiful quote of many and this novel is filled with so many beautiful lines that the pages of my copy will be eventually littered with bookmarks.

What I adore most about Chasing Paper Cranes is that it has the reader delving as deep into themselves as much as they are routing for the novel's main protagonist (and Cal of course) ....
How your experiences shape you; how your decisions have the power to change your path; and mostly how important it is to invest in yourself and your happiness always, as well as in other people... It's all here. The author takes you on a journey where the every experience becomes remarkable and shows you the power we have over not only our own destiny, but ultimately our happiness too. When you read this book, you will come to know what paper cranes mean to you.

Life is made of connections of all kinds and I am a firm believer that people come into our lives for reasons we don't always understand at the time, but they always teach us something. The author clearly believes this too and her beautiful writing empowers her readers to feel inspired to be the best they can be long after they have finished reading this novel.

Seriously, anyone reading this, get a copy of Chasing Paper Cranes. It is beautifully written, honest and touching. I promise you won't regret it.

A story you can fall in love with, unreservedly!

Boy, howdy, I am a little bit in love with this novel. It’s a little bit YA coming-of-age, a little bit heartbreak and recovery, a lot European adventure. It's a great collection, but there isn't an index of authors organized alphabetically. If you're looking for a specific article organized by author, you have to figure out which year the text was written in and then check the table of contents. This is really annoying and it takes me almost 5 minutes to just find what I'm looking for.

Cennino's Handbook, Still Illuminating

Art, genuine art, is a pleasure not only in the thrill of color and line but in its procedure and materials. In fifteenth-century Florence, an artist named Cennino d'Andrea Cennini compiled a handbook for contemporary and future painters to consult in their drawing and painting from the beginning, in choosing their ingredients, mixing their paints and preparing their paper or cloth for painting on.

Unlike the making of sausage, the elements of creating art are a delight. Here are some how-to's excerpted from this wonderful little book (translated by Daniel V. Thompson, Jr., 1933, reprinted numerous times by Dover), still vibrant five hundred years after it was composed. The details also unwittingly reveal something of contemporary everyday life, where the art came from.

To paint on a panel, you start with a little boxwood panel nine inches square, washed with clear water and rubbed and smoothed down. "And when this little panel is thoroughly dry, take enough bone, ground diligently for two hours, to serve . . . take less than half a bean of this bone, or even less. And stir this bone up with saliva. Spread it all over the little panel with your fingers; and, before it gets dry, hold the little panel in your left hand, and tap over the panel with the finger tip of your right hand [presumably Cennino was right-handed] until you see that it is quite dry. And it will get coated with bone as evenly in one place as in another."

Wondering where to find the bone? "You must know what bone is good. Take bone from the second joints and wings of fowls, or of a capon; and the older they are the better. Just as you find them under the dining-table, put them into the fire; and when you see that they have turned whiter than ashes, draw them out, and grind them well on the porphyry."

Parchment comes from sheep or goats; to draw on sheep parchment, the artist lightly inscribes the background of bone with a sharp point. "On the parchment you may draw or sketch with this [stylus] of yours if you first put some of that bone . . . all over the parchment . . . dusting it off with a hare's foot." To add ink, "shade the folds with washes of ink; that is, as much water as a nutshell would hold, with two drops of ink in it; and shade with a brush made of minever tails . . ."

"And if you ever make a slip, so that you want to remove some stroke made by this little lead, take a bit of the crumb of some bread, and rub it over the paper, and you will remove whatever you wish."

The artist gives equally clear and detailed instructions for whittling goose quills to get a sharp point for ink drawing, to tempering paper with several coats of glue (tempera), to making clear tracing paper by scraping kid parchment and treating it with linseed oil. White lead is a basic ingredient, so is saliva. (Saliva combined with lead poses a health hazard; painters often died young.) Colors come largely from minerals, and the author explains how to pulverize and mix minerals to produce the paints desired.

Cennino explains every procedure in gessoing, stamping on gold, working on cloth, painting on velvet (yes, it goes way back), gilding saints' haloes, designing brocades, and embellishing with gold or tin. Much of a loss for art history, his instructions for mosaics are regrettably long since gone.

The author also makes some opening remarks designed to put art in context in creation. Much as he loves art, Cennino subordinates it to thinking, and he never loses sight of the fact that it is work. After the fall, "Man . . . pursued many useful occupations, differing from each other," some "more theoretical than others; they could not all be alike, since theory is the most worthy." Art is a "labor of love," but it is still labor.

Still, his praise for art, being genuine, is as strong as any I have ever read: "Close to [theory], man pursued . . . an occupation known as painting, which calls for imagination, and skill of hand, in order to discover things not seen, hiding themselves under the shadow of natural objects, and to fix them with the hand, presenting to plain sight what does not actually exist. And it justly deserves to be enthroned next to theory, and to be crowned with poetry."

instruction manual for historic painting

This little gem contains a great deal of use for anyone trying to duplicate authentic, medieval /rennaisance painting techniques. The instructions on making egg tempera paints, for example, are extremely clear. This book may as well have "required reading" on the cover for anyone who is interested in painting, calligraphy, illumination or related fields in history and practice.

Please be aware! many techniques, pigments, and methods used in history were hazardous. many pigments in use in proffessional art workshops today are hazardous as well, but the Medeival artist did not have OSHA regulations and disclaimers. Please investigate the safety of ANY procedure or pigment before use.

This book is referenced by many other authors and webpages for their instructions, and can be used as Primary Documentation for most living history groups

Very comprehensive view of old art techniques

I found this book to be a very fascinating how-to manual. A lot of the terms, however, would have been lost on me if were not for my Making of Art Supplies class. This is definitely not a book for the beginner to pick up and start making art supplies. Very useful for the Renaissance Faire attendee looking for a way to polish up an artist character.
