a very detailed textbook

This book deals with broad issues about the language. It is reasonable to understand because most of the ideas are supported by detailed examples and studies. This book is suitable for college students interested in languages and the field of linguistics.

Very informative and easy to understand textbook for those who have no prior knowledge to the subject

I purchased this book for a communications class I took last fall, the book was very helpful, I did very well in the class and attribute that much to this book. I say this for several reasons.
The 1st being the fact that the textbook provides a very engaging and friendly introduction to the study of language.
The 2nd reason this book helped me so much is that I had zero knowledge of the subject at hand and the book effectively presents information in bite-size sections, making it easy for people like me (with no prior knowledge) very simple to understand the pivotal concepts.
The book itself very clearly explains various subjects, and does so very clearly, from how children learn language to why people in assimilated societies sound or speak differently.
I should also mention that the 5th edition has been both revised and updated, this addition includes new figures and tables, additional topics, and new very helpful examples. The book is question also includes 30 new topics to help with student engagement in the class and also to increase your problem solving and critical thinking skills.
With all that being said, if you're new to the study of language I highly suggest you purchase this book, it helped me achieve the grade I wanted/offered me very insightful information, I think it will do the same for you.

Great book!

The study of language helped me understand my language class I take in college. It's very detailed and explains everything in a simple manner. I got the book on kindle, saved a lot of money then buying it in college or hard copy.
