What's on your mind when you talk?

Time may be reflected in text in two ways: the flow of the utterance itself, and the temporal frame referred to in what is said. Both of these basic facts of language may be related to the what goes on in our minds when we talk, to allow for the generation of what is said and for the possibility of temporal displacement of its contents. Chafe explores implications of these facts by examining observed discourse, e.g. in connection with topicality (referents already on our minds). He does not carry out structural formalizations of his suggestions, nor relate them to chronometric studies of language processing, but does have a nice example from the Senecan langugage. His promise of a research program on these topics is left for the future, and for a more enlightened psychology.

A great interpretation of discourse analysis

I think this approach is a link between social psychology and linguistics, the author is a psychologist but his analysis is purely linguistic; a thorough consideration of the elements to consider in analysis that will account for speech and thought, as much as possible in regards to their difference specially in speed.

Memory, Language, and Imagination

A fabulous book about how communication. If it was read by tech writers, I think a lot of tech writing (as well as legal) would be infinitely better. At the root of many of the ideas is how we hear and process things in our brain - it may not be "real" linguistics (although the author is a linguist) but it's really useful.
