Perhaps it echoes the story Sam Spade recounts in Hammett’s Maltese Falcon, about a man who has a narrow escape from accidental death on his way to work one morning. He reponds by disappearing, and by the time Spade finds him he has recreated his original life halfway across the country. He adjusted to a world in which beams fell, Spade tells us, and then no more beams fell, and he adjusted to that.

No More Keller ?

Loved the Keller Series - This is a fine ending to a terrific series, But I'm desperately hoping that Keller decided to come out of retirement soon.

Keller In The Post 9-11 World

The post 9-11 world made things difficult for Keller. He'd spent days helping the rescue effort, doling out food to the workers until the Red Cross moved in and made it unpalatable for him. He didn't like flying anymore. All the I.D. requirements weren't good for a hit man. Too many trails left.
He gets a job and drives from New York To Phoenix. It's a bitch of a job. The target is retired, lives alone in a gated community with it's own golf course, and seldom cones out. Ten foot high adobe walls with sensors completely surround the place. An inner wall five feet high with a middle ground of cacti and very quiet Dobermans that roam at night. Two gates with very alert guards that know everybody and require I.D. and destination for those they don't.
It seemed impossible.
But that's why Keller was good at his job.
