Game of Thrones... Ethiopian style.

This book centres on the very specific period of the "Era of the Princes", a time of political turmoil that affected Ethiopia in the 18-19th Centuries.
Mordechai Abir's work is extremely informative, rich in detail, giving a vivid ilustration of the "who is who" of the period (and there's quite a few!) and the "why they did what", which is often confusing, bizarre and utterly machievalic.
For a reader with little prior knowledge on Ethiopia, the book will appear dense, even suffocating, as it jumps straight to business.
For those interested in Ethiopian history and, indeed, Ethiopian current affairs, the book is well worth reading as one gets a feel for the regional dynamics in Ethiopian politics, an issue still very much alive today.
The gradual power shift from northern Ethiopia to central Ethiopia (Shewa province) is well explained, as is the often confusing list of kings and emperors from Oromo and Muslim backgrounds who succesfully crowned themselves, although challenged by the rulers of other regions.
Unfortunately, the term "Galla" is used in all instances when referring to Oromo people. This is now considered extremely derogatory, but was not necessarily the case when the book was authored 30 years ago.
Personally, I believe Tsehai Publishers know how offensive the word "Galla" is, and should thus change it to "Oromo" for the sake of common respect.
