About the Author
Andrea Parrot is a professor in the department of policy analysis and management at Cornell University. She is also a clinical professor of psychiatry at Upstate Medical University. Parrot is the author of numerous books, monographs, training manuals, and articles. She has appeared on many television and radio programs, including Face the Nation, Larry King Live, Oprah, and CBS This Morning. Professor Parrot has presented her work internationally, and has been an invited lecturer to over 100 college and University campuses around the world. Nina Cummings is a health educator specializing in women's health and the Victim Advocate at Cornell University. She is currently an adjunct faculty member at Ithaca College where she teaches Women and Health each spring. For over twenty years, her work has focused on violence against women, victimology, sexual violence prevention and education, and women's health. Ms. Cummings has collaborated on several publications with co-author Andrea Parrot including Rape 101: Sexual Assault Prevention for College Athletes.

Depressing. Inspiring.

Two women become the voices for millions more in this horrifying yet uplifting literary work. The book vividly details the affects of misogyny and sexism against half of humanity, and how it is manifested around the world. With references to at least 70 countries, no race, religion, or culture is given a pass. Some acts of violence against women that are addressed are universal - present in just about every country on Earth. Rape (including mass war rape), domestic violence, forced prostitution & sex slavery, and human trafficking are some of them. Other forms of violence that are addressed are more specific to certain areas of the globe. Honor killings (an entire chapter is devoted to it), dowry deaths & bride burnings, acid attacks, bride kidnappings, and female genital cutting are examples. There are many stories about and quotes by women who were victims of such atrocities. But for every heartbreaking tale, there are passages of hope. The story of Mukhtaran Bibi is especially uplifting. The authors conclude that violence against women is a learned habit - one than can be unlearned. Highly recommended.

This book is a well-researched and compassionate overview of a subject that is coming to the forefront of victim rights advocates. Both authors speak to the individual and collective brutalization of women worldwide, and the anecdotal information from the female crime victims who are so brave to challenge the systems and people who brutalized them lend a personal note to the statistics presented. Excellent resource for anyone needing an accurate overview for purposes of victim advocacy.

About the Author
Michael Burgan has written numerous books for children and young adults during his nearly 20 years as a freelance writer. Many of his books have focused on U.S. history, geography, and the lives of world leaders. He has also written fiction and adapted classic novels. Michael has won several awards for his writing, and his graphic novel version of the classic tale Frankenstein (Stone Arch Books) was a Junior Library Guild selection.  Michael has also worked as an editor at Weekly Reader, the classroom news magazine used in schools across the United States. Michael graduated from the University of Connecticut with a bachelor’s degree in history. When not writing for kids, he enjoys writing plays, and his works have been staged across the United States. He lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with his cat, Callie.

A nice book

I was looking for a copy of this book to replace a library book that was lost. I ordered this one, not realizing that this was a graphic novel, but I do think that young people would be more likely to read this since it is written in graphic novel form. I replaced the book with a library edition and I will donate this book to the school library - I think the youngsters will enjoy it!

King Tut's tomb and the curse of King Tut is the subject of this graphic history. Ancient Egypt is a great subject for study and my ESOL students love this topic. This book will be great in helping them learn English and comprehend the story better.

Good Deal

I would say it looks like new. No scratch, no marks, everything in really good condition. I prefer to rent the Student Activities Manual book because I just see the exercises that the professor tells me to do, and then I solved them in my notebooks, so I can return them back in the same condition I received them.

Not usually required but a good study aid

I did not need this for the class I took but bought it anyway. It has some great exercises for practicing what you learn from the textbook. Even if you don't need it for assigned homework, Chinese is best learned if you apply some extra practice and this book can help you guide yourself in that area.

Richard reduces non-duality to the simplest, clearest explanation humanly possible given the limits of language. Add an intro by Tony Parsons and it doesn't get any better. Throw all your other non-duality books away!

Once more Richard Sylvester is uncompromising in his concept of non-duality. This book is a series of dialogs that took place in Germany and there was often tea and cake and great lunches.. What separates Richard from other teachers is his wonderful sense of humor and sheer intelligence. I recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in non-duality and what it really means..

Great for new teachers!

This is a terrific book dealing with all of the various forms of communication that is so critical to teaching. It discusses various types of communication styles that is common in a school and how to effectively navigate through the challenges that arise for each. Examples are the authoritarian principal, the charming coworker that manipulates others into doing his job, overbearing parents, the control freak of a coworker, etc. It will walk you through how to deal with parents, students, coworkers, support staff, etc and I found it to be very authentic. As I read through this I found myself identifying attributes of my parents and coworkers and the advice was dead on when working with them. Typical challenge areas for new teachers are how to deal with an irate parent, when and why to seek help from an administrator, the importance of identifying teachers that are mutually respected by both other teachers and colleagues and seeking advice, identifying and respecting the communication chain of command, and personal pitfalls to avoid. Time and time again I witness coworkers and parents struggle with communication in our environment due to the passion that surrounds what we do each day. I will absolutely give a copy of this to my new colleagues and take the time to discuss the various aspects covered in the book. It also helped to rejuvenate my personal commitment to have a positive communication style and it was great to just take a little bit of time to pause and contemplate everything covered. The book is also very easy and quick to read so find a copy and pass it around!
