great asset for jazz bassists

I studied with Putter over 25 years ago at the Musician's Institute. He was hands down the best bass instructor there on a variety of levels with his incredible knowledge of not only jazz standards, but composition, music theory and jazz bass technique. I was very excited to find his book; I am returning to playing and the need to refresh a lot of basics after pursuing a career as a luthier, and quite frankly, most bass books I perused do not even being to compare. This book provides a firm foundation, and it explains in clear ways how to proceed through Putter's studies...if you do the work, you will definitely improve. The CD also gives one a boost and helpful ear training to boot. Thank you, Putter, for laying all this out in such a user friendly format. Bravo!

Putter is a teacher at Musician's Institute. Putter is a well-known master of his instrument having played with an astonishing array of great musicians including: Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey, Duke Ellington, Billy Eckstine, Diane Schuur, Lee Konitz, Bruce Forman, Jackie and Roy, Carmen McRae, Gary Foster, Alan Broadbent, Art Farmer, Blue Mitchell, Erroll Garner, Gerry Mulligan, Art Pepper, Mason Williams, Percy Faith, Burt Bacharach, Ray Charles, The Manhattan Transfer, and Johnny Mathis, to name but a few.
He is hands absolutely one of the most amazing bass instructors there is! Putter's has a overwhelming amount of knowledge which he shares including composition, music theory and bass technique. If you are willing to put in the effort, you will absolutely improve!
