About the Author
Don Hahn's name is synonymous with some of the most critically acclaimed animated motion pictures of this generation, including The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Lion King, and Beauty and the Beast, (the first animated film ever nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture (and before the Best Animated Film category was established). He was also the associate producer for Who Framed Roger Rabbit, the groundbreaking 1988 film that pioneered new techniques for combining animation and live-action. His other film credits include Fantasia/2000 and Atlantis. He is currently at work on his next Disney animated film.

Don't Think That You're Creative? Well, Don Hahn Knows You Are!

As I sat down to write this review, I ruminated on the advice tendered by Don Hahn. I looked at the blank screen and wondered how to properly express the corporeality of the book as I knock about on my own journey to understand my creativity.
The main thrust of this book is about inspiring creativity in our daily life; the driving force behind recognizing where your creativity wants to be: cooking, painting, blogging, gardening, creating marketing reports, etc. Hahn takes us on a gentle, amusing and thought-provoking path towards a self-enlightenment, of sorts. A self-enlightenment of creativity and where it might reside within us.
To the initiated, it is obvious why Don Hahn is qualified to write a book about creativity. He produced some of the most successful animated films of all time and is considered to be one of the driving forces behind the rebirth of Disney Animation, (To the uninitiated: Beauty and the Beast. The Lion King. Hello!?!)
Hahn's style is very affable and never very sententious. He writes from the heart and it is obvious that he fosters a true desire to help us become a more creative self. The book is replete with anecdotes from the span of Hahn's life. When he paints the picture of his much younger self sneaking a colander to bed to fashion impromptu constellations, you can sense the wonder and trepidation he must have felt. Disney enthusiasts will love the stories Hahn relates about his years in the Disney Animation Studios. We meet legends that mentored him, co-workers that dazzled him (and us) and people that fostered (sometimes unintentionally) his creativity in his youth.
For myself, Hahn's work made me stop and think about how I like to be creative and what strategies might work best for me. I love writing and I seem to work best with a notepad when I gather my thoughts. I can take months to get a good article going as I devour resources and fine tune the project in my mind. I have great ideas in the car, so I carry a voice recorder with me. Hahn never wrote about those specific things, but he does offer admonition about how to find our own creative roots. Even if that is sitting on a beach in Hawaii while eating dark chocolates.
Brain Storm is a book that I recommend to anyone thinking about the creative process, especially if you believe that you don't have a creative bone in your body. Hahn is a natural storyteller and the lessons he imparts flow so much better than an off-the-shelf self-help book. It is a great resource for when you want to take your first steps in finding your personal creativity or if you have lost your way creatively.

Contemplative,reflective, and right on the money, book.

Don Hahn,what can I say? artist-producer-director-and now writer has with his book,Brainstorm Unleashing your Creative self,just, and I really cannot phrase it anymore appropos than he already has with his book title; Simply unleashed a truely dynamic,easy to read humanistic, heartwarming, thoughtful,reflective,and in my own opinion a much needed book in the field of; I hate to be trite with this phrase; Self-help-genre. In addition, it is my own opinion that the reader will find themselves throughout their read; laughing at times,nodding in agreement, and perhaps even shedding a tear at times. All of which I found myself doing. I really cannot remember having read a book such as this that really,and the best way I can describe it is; touched the core of my own humanity and in such a wonderful simplified way. Before I began reading Brainstorm, I thought I was creative, or a creative type so to speak. But this book really had me reflect,and contemplate; And I asked myself; Mark,don't be so jaded in your self-appraisal. There is always room for inner growth and greater creativity. It ain't over till it's over! to use a sometimes common phrase.
In conclusion, Don Hahn has simply iluminated the path toward one's
greater creative expression in this life. A must read for anyone really interested not only in creative expression but; and in my own opinion once again; living a more loving,kind,wondrous, life not only with oneself but amongst all the other wonderful human beings

Great, Inspiring Book
By Struggling Artist
What a breath of fresh air this book has been for me. As someone who considers themselves creative, yet struggles to get in touch with that creativity and advance it every day - this book was so very helpful. Putting yourself out there as creative person can be one of the scariest experiences in life. What if I fail? What if no one likes what I do? What if I suck? What this book has helped me learn is that none of that matters. Put the negative distractions out of your mind and just create. You can't get good if you never start and continue to strive. Thanks Mr. Hahn for the inspiring words and encouragement. Very generous book!
