Previous Editions

I haven't seen this new edition, but the previous editions were seriously flawed. You may look at my reviews of those books. The author made some corrections in the last edition, but it still had very basic language mistakes throughout. I guess the book's intent is misguided in the first place. You don't really need a "basic" "Costa Rican" phrasebook. For that purpose any basic Spanish phrasebook would do. And then the problem I found by consulting the book and in a few emails with the writer is that he was not an expert at all on Costa Rican Spanish or Spanish in general. So he made mistakes in Spanish and specifically in his assumption of what Costa Ricans would say or what terms they would use. I have a feeling he's just someone that was in the position to publish this book and no doubt make some big bucks from its publication. If Lonely Planet were serious about this publication the book would have a true expert or experts on Costa Rican Spanish writing it. My original recommendation still goes, which is to buy a good bilingual dictionary instead. What are my qualifications for this review? B.A., M.A., Ph.D., all in Spanish, 20 years of language instruction, married to a Tica for 7 years (7 long years by the way), learned Spanish originally in Costa Rica, have spent several years there overall and several more in Central America and Mexico, and several years of interpreting and translating experience, etc.
Well, now that I look again, maybe this is the last edition I did see, just with a different cover.
Update: I'm in Costa Rica right now and yesterday at the University of Costa Rica bookstore I had a chance to see this new edition. The very first page of the book starts out with what looks like almost the exact email response I sent to the author years ago about the "voseo" in Costa Rica. He now states, correctly, that it's used in Costa Rica, not "tú". However, just briefly thumbing through the book I saw mistakes and the use of "tú" rather than "vos". I also took a moment to look at the pronunciation section. Apparently he's still has the Australian English equivalents for the the vowel sounds, not American English. Again, all these mistakes would be avoided if a real expert on Spanish and particularly Costa Rican Spanish were to write the book. Ironically, several Costa Ricans have told me this week that the "voseo" is actually disappearing from Costa Rican Spanish and that more and more young people are using only "usted". I just had two more people confirm this for me. So this author might want to once again revise his book.

comprehensive and great for looking up phrases quickly

took this along to costa rica and has everything you need. divided into sections such as transportation, dining, etc. it has a section in the beginning about pronounciation. and also has good tips on costa rican specific spanish and customs

Costa Rica Phrase Book

Used this book on trip to Costa Rica. Only knew a few phrases in Spanish before I went. It was useful and organized well with common phrases divided into topics and pronunciations and grammar rules. It is small enough to easily keep on hand. Glad I had it with me.
